CIA.IS, established as KÍM (Kynningarmiðstöð íslenskrar myndlistar) in 2005, is primarily funded by the Icelandic Ministry of Culture. For the first time in history the main Icelandic art institutions and artist associations founded together an institution which tends to promote Icelandic art. CIA.IS’ role is to promote Icelandic visual artists abroad. The Center assists them in realizing their art projects abroad through means of funding, networking and cooperation with public and private associations, organizations and enterprises.
As founding director Christian Schoen moved to Reykjavik in 2005. Es has built up the institution, its organizing structure, its grant program and he developed a rich international program.
